#StandWithDefenders to demand an end to the criminalisation and violence, and call on governments everywhere to respect the land rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

This is what you can do:

1 minute:
Share our video, or send out a tweet and use one of our banners, or retweet Land Rights Now.

2 minutes:
Sign and share the petition

5 minutes:

Take a picture of yourself with tape on your mouth saying “Land Rights Now”, symbolising the silencing and criminalisation of land rights defenders. Share on social media with #landrightsnow #standwithdefenders

Stand with criminalised defenders in:

Guatemalawhere Q’eqchi indigenous leader Bernardo Caal has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for his defense of the Cahabón river against a hydroelectric project.

The Philippines, where five members of the Compostela Farmers Association have been in prison awaiting trial since 2017 on false charges because they opposed a mining project in Mindanao. Mining projects in this area have already intensified the impacts of the super-typhoons that hit the island with devastating regularity.

Colombiawhere a group of Wayuu Indigenous Women are victims of a smear campaign in the media that has lead to direct threats against them for their work to defend land rights and protect water from dangerous coal mining projects.

Chilewhere Colla indigenous woman leader Ercilia Araya from the Pai-Ote Community has been subject to years of legal harassment for defending her community’s lands and water from a Canadian mining company.

* Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Pygmy Indigenous leader Kasole Kalimbiro has just been released from prison after being held on false charges for advocating for the rights of his community, which was forced from their lands to make way for a protected area.

Finally,  learn about the Global initiative to address and prevent the criminalisation and impunity against Indigenous Peoples that I am leading with my colleague and friend UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous People Vicky Tauli-Corpuz at www.indigenousrightsinternational.org to be launched on 6 December 2019.

Charmaine Anne MacDonald Some people protect the land ???? Some people fight to save our planet ???? Some people defend their rights ✊???? And there are those who punish them for it. Stop the criminalization of Indigenous Peoples. #StandWithDefenders ???? https://landrightsnow.org/get-involved/petition-criminalisation-land-rights-defenders/ @LandRightsNow #LandRightsNow
