Consuming antibiotics is one of the single worst things you can do to your gut.

Consuming antibiotics is one of the single worst things you can do to your gut. Stop! Before you continue reading, please consider that sometimes antibiotics are prescribed by a doctor for good reason, and they do come with benefits that lead to positive health outcomes. More on that in a moment. You may now continue reading.

Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria, both good and bad. When you take antibiotics, you are killing off the good bacteria in your gut, which can lead to a number of problems, including: diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food poisoning, and allergic reactions.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself, "I don't take antibiotics, so I'm good!" Not so fast! In 2010, Monsanto was awarded a patent for its weed killer product, glyphosate, as an antibiotic. Glyphosate works by disrupting a crucial pathway for manufacturing aromatic amino acids in plants. The chemical is absorbed in the soil, and the plants, which go into your body directly, or as an ingredient in a processed food, such as vegetable oils.

"But I eat organic, so those chemicals aren't being sprayed on the food I eat." Well...unfortunately, glyphosate is so ubiquitously used that even organic items test positive for glyphosate, but it is a step towards mitigating large doses of it in your everyday diet.
