A new study from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center has provided more evidence that aerobic exercise can significantly improve memory in older adults. Published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, the research focused on how physical activity boosts blood flow to critical areas of the brain involved in memory, potentially lowering the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

The study involved 30 participants aged 60 and older, all with pre-existing memory issues. They were split into two groups: one group engaged in aerobic exercise, while the other focused on stretching exercises. Both groups exercised for 25 to 30 minutes, three times a week, for a full year. At the end of the study, the exercise group showed a 47% improvement in memory scores compared to the stretching group.

The reason behind this improvement lies in the increased blood flow to two key brain regions: the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the hippocampus. The ACC is involved in attention and memory, while the hippocampus is crucial for both short-term and long-term memory functions. The findings suggest that aerobic exercise not only enhances memory but could potentially reverse existing memory loss, particularly in the early stages of cognitive decline.

Senior researcher Binu Thomas, Ph.D., emphasized that even if memory starts to fade, incorporating aerobic exercise into one's routine can still make a big difference.
