How Alcohol Destroys Your Brain

Posted by Bobby Brown on June 09, 2025 - 10:33pm

A recent study published in Neurology has raised concerns about alcohol's potential to contribute to dementia by damaging the brain. The research explored how moderate, heavy, and former heavy drinking can impact various aspects of the brain, particularly in relation to dementia-related neuropathologies. The study found that all levels of alcohol consumption were linked to hyaline arteriolosclerosis, a thickening and narrowing of the blood vessels, which is more common in older adults and those with certain health conditions.

The study, conducted in Brazil, examined the brains of 1,781 participants and found that former heavy drinkers had lower brain mass ratios and poorer cognitive abilities compared to those who never drank. Heavy drinkers faced a 133% higher risk of developing hyaline arteriolosclerosis, and both heavy and former heavy drinkers were more likely to have neurofibrillary tangles, a key feature of Alzheimer's disease pathology. Former heavy drinkers also showed lower brain weights and slightly worse cognitive function than never drinkers, though heavy and moderate drinkers did not show significant differences in cognitive function.

Although alcohol didn’t directly impact cognitive abilities in this study, the researchers suggested that hyaline arteriolosclerosis, influenced by alcohol consumption, may contribute to cognitive decline. These findings suggest that alcohol can have a damaging effect on the brain, especially in the context of aging and alcohol use over time.  Time To Take Care Of Your Brain: www.superbrainpower.org
