How Do We Remember Our Dreams

A new study on dream recall suggests three key factors that determine whether we remember our dreams after waking: attitude towards dreams, tendency to mind wander, and sleep patterns. The study, led by Giulio Bernardi and published in Communications Psychology, tracked 217 healthy adults over four years to understand what influences dream recall.

The research found that people who value dreams are more likely to report having dreamed, but this doesn’t necessarily help them remember the content. Interestingly, those who tend to daydream or let their minds wander are more likely to recall their dreams. Sleep patterns also play a role, with longer sleep durations and less deep sleep linked to better dream recall. The study also noted seasonal variations, with people recalling dreams more often in the spring and autumn than in the winter.
