Microplastics in the air

Posted by Bobby Brown on February 15, 2025 - 3:20pm

Microplastics in the air have been linked to respiratory problems, cancer, and even infertility in both men and women, according to a recent review of approximately 3,000 studies. These tiny particles, often invisible to the naked eye, are increasingly prevalent in our environment. Microplastics are intentionally produced for use in various products, including cosmetics. However, they are also unintentionally released into the environment through the wear and tear of tires and road surfaces during driving, adding to the growing concern of plastic pollution.

The global production of plastic, which currently stands at a staggering 460 million metric tons, is projected to more than double by 2050, further exacerbating the problem. The health risks associated with plasticizers and plastic-related compounds, such as phthalates and BPA, are well documented, with links to preterm birth, reproductive issues, and various toxicities. Microplastics pose a direct threat to human health as they can accumulate in the body, triggering immune responses and causing local particle toxicity.

These particles can infiltrate the human body through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact, eventually finding their way from the intestines into vital organs like the kidney, liver, and brain. Experts are particularly worried about the impact of microplastics on respiratory health as they can cause chronic pulmonary inflammation, increasing the risk of lung cancer. Researchers and health professionals are calling for increased awareness and government intervention to reduce microplastic exposure and protect public health.
