In a New brain map, Mitochondria reveal hidden energy secrets of the brain

Your brain doesn’t use energy equally everywhere—and now scientists know exactly where the most powerful “batteries” are located.

In a groundbreaking study published in Nature, researchers created the first-ever full map of mitochondria in the human brain—those tiny organelles that fuel every brain function, from memory and movement to emotions and thought. They took 703 tiny cubes from a single donor’s brain and measured both the number and efficiency of mitochondria in each region. What they found was surprising: the more recently evolved areas of the brain, like those responsible for language and abstract thinking, had not only more mitochondria, but ones that worked better too. Regions like the frontal and temporal lobes were energy hot spots, while the putamen—deep inside the brain and responsible for movement—had an unusually high density of these energy engines as well.

Using advanced gene sequencing and MRI data from thousands of healthy brains, the team built a predictive model that can estimate mitochondrial activity across the entire brain using only brain scans. This new tool, named MitoBrainMap, helps connect cellular energy to mental processes and disorders like depression, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
