It’s easy to get swept up in spring cleaning so we wanted to give you some tips for cleaning safely without doing damage to your microbiome and the environment.
First proposed in 1989, the ‘Hygiene Hypothesis’ suggests that over-exposure to harsh cleaning products and sterile home environments (among other factors) have made people less physically hardy in a variety of ways*, including increased allergies.
There is a balance, obviously - it’s important to practice hygiene that prevents the spread of disease, but some products can really wipe out the diverse bacterial environment in a home that can support a healthy balanced gut. We recommend avoiding cleaners specifically labeled “anti-microbial” and “antibacterial” as well as sulfates, phthalates, bleach, ammonia, petroleum, or synthetic "fragrance". This will help you take care of your microbiome and motherearth who sustains you.
