tryptophan nap

Posted by Bobby Brown on October 28, 2023 - 5:45pm

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the inevitable "tryptophan nap" convo usually creeps up after a big turkey dinner. Turkey is a great source of tryptophan along with cheese, chicken, egg whites, fish, milk, sunflower seeds, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and soybeans. So it's unlikely that turkey is the sole reason for that post-supper sleepiness.

Tryptophan is frequently touted as a napping chemical because the body uses tryptophan to help make melatonin, which helps regulates the sleep-wake cycle. The more likely cause for a post-Thanksgiving dinner nap, however, is the overconsumption of food in general, including carb-heavy treats, which don't exactly encourage one to go out and do a bunch of jumping jacks.

When it comes to the gut, however, tryptophan is also a precursor to serotonin, which is an important neurotransmitter that helps regulate appetite, sleep, mood, and more. In fact, 95% of this "feel good" hormone is made in your gut making gut health key when it comes to mood regulation!

GutBiome6 Gut Support helps protect your gut from the onslaught of environmental toxins, which can wreck your gut health and thereby impact your serotonin levels and mood.
