Did you know that one of the major factors affecting access to nutrient-dense food is the use of unsustainable farming practices and high yield pressures?
You may be asking yourself "what does that mean and how does that affect me?"
Let's dig into it a little deeper...
A few common farming practices that are affecting the nutrients in the soil include a combination of over-cultivation, overgrazing, excess tillage, and overuse of NPK (nitrate, phosphate, and potassium) fertilizers.
When these practices are used, they destroy some beneficial microorganisms, symbiotic bacteria, and fungi that supply nutrients to crops. If microorganisms are not present, the crop may not achieve its fullest nutritional potential.
“High-yield crops burden the nutritional capacity of our soils, affecting the alkalinity or acidity. With an imbalanced soil-base, it’s as if the plants are on life support. According to Rodale Institute, there is roughly 60 years of topsoil left if we continue to use conventional practices.”
