Your Brain On Fat and Sugar: A Deadly Combo

Posted by Bobby Brown on June 10, 2025 - 1:21pm

New research from the University of Sydney has shown that diets high in fat and sugar can harm our brain function, especially when it comes to navigating and remembering places. This study, published in the International Journal of Obesity, is the first to test how high-fat, high-sugar (HFHS) diets impact spatial navigation in humans. Spatial navigation is our ability to remember routes and find our way around, a skill connected to the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory.

Led by Dr. Dominic Tran, the study revealed that people who regularly consumed a lot of sugary and fatty foods performed worse in a test that measured their ability to navigate a virtual maze. This suggests that HFHS diets may affect the hippocampus, which is essential for spatial memory. However, the good news is that the effects are reversible. By changing their diet, people can improve the health of their hippocampus and boost their ability to navigate better.

The research involved 55 university students, aged 18-38, who completed a series of tasks. They filled out questionnaires about their eating habits, took a working memory test, and navigated a virtual reality maze. Those who ate fewer sugary and fatty foods were better at remembering the location of the "treasure" in the maze, even after completing multiple trials.

Dr. Tran emphasized that this study is important because it shows that diet impacts brain function even in young adults, a time when cognitive abilities are typically strong. While the study was small and participants may have been healthier than the general population, the results highlight the importance of healthy eating habits to protect our brains from cognitive decline Your Brain Health Is Important  www.superbrainpower.org
