23 Percent of U.S. Adults Meet Exercise Recommendations

Less than one-quarter of all U.S. adults get enough aerobic and strength-training exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people 18 to 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least twice per week.

While the nation has surpassed the Healthy People 2020 initiative goal of just over 20 percent of U.S. adults meeting exercise recommendations by 2020, shortfalls remain in some states and among certain demographics.

Colorado has the highest percentage of adults who get enough exercise; many of the states in which people don’t meet the guidelines are in the Southeast. Overall, 13 states and the District of Columbia significantly surpassed exercise guidelines, and 13 states were substantially below them. By gender, about 28.8 percent of men meet the guidelines, ranging from 40.5 percent in Washington, D.C., to 17.5 percent in South Dakota; and 20.9 percent of women get enough exercise, ranging from 33.6 percent in Colorado to just 10.5 percent in Mississippi.
