It is an inescapable truth that in a business like ours we can only grow if there are new people coming into the team. Learning how to ‘Contact' therefore, becomes one of the core activities essential for success.
When you think about it, contacting people about your business is no different to any other type of business in the world. Whether you were talking about pizzas, shoes, real estate, insurance or gardening - every single business is about connecting with the people who are looking for you.
In this way, business building is about exposure and problem-solving. We are not looking for a 'specific kind of person'; rather we are looking for the person who is already looking specifically for us.
When it comes to contacting, the most common question that comes up in coaching is “Am I doing something wrong?”
Despite our best efforts, we all sometimes get stuck, we don’t always get the results we hoped for, we get frustrated, we can’t seem to get anyone to say yes... and we are left wondering if we are somehow flawed.
In my experience there are two simple ways to get UN-stuck. Either there is a problem with the:
STRATEGY
or there is a problem with our
VOLUME
Here is a very easy way to test:
Strategy: if you have spoken to 100 people about Asea and everybody has said ‘no', then it is probably fair to say that there is something not quite connecting within your strategy. It may be what you’re saying, how you’re saying it, what you’re thinking when you’re saying it.
The good news is that there is not just one 'right way' to do things, or one single key to the door. There are hundreds of strategies, scripts and platforms that work well in our industry. Of all the hundreds of Diamonds, there are no two that have done this in exactly the same way.
Who do you connect with? There is a wealth of information and training to help you find a style you can replicate. After all, why would you want to invent a new way of doing something when you can easily just copy somebody else who has success already?
In most cases however, strategy is not the problem. Most of us are overtrained and well equipped. There are more ‘right’ ways to do this than wrong ones.
In most cases, what holds us up is ‘volume’. We are probably doing everything right - we just aren’t doing enough.
There have been around 120 days in this year so far. Have you spoken to at least 120 people? For someone who is running a business, speaking to at least one person a day is really not very much. Anything less and we would have to call it a hobby.
If you're not going through the numbers, it really doesn't matter how great your phone call is - the low exposure means there is very little chance of you bumping into the right person.
In 99% of cases we have sufficient information about what to do, and strategy is not a problem. In the majority of cases we simply aren’t doing enough. This is why a 90 day blitz can transform your business. A burst of activity will not only put you in front of more people, but repetition is also the fastest way for us to improve our skills.
You quickly learn what works, you quickly learn what doesn’t. And most important of all, with high activity you gain confidence and courage, and a level of conviction which is more important than any strategy in the world.
