We have all experienced people in our lives who adjust their temperature to their current surroundings. For example, this person might receive some great news and now their flying high. Like the popular 80's song says, "Ain't nobody going to break my stride. Got to keep moving." They are in the zone and it's going to be a great day.
And then suddenly....
Someone calls them with some bad news. Maybe someone quit on their team. Or, someone is having challenges with their business, etc. and they are really frustrated. Instead of helping this person put things into perspective, keeping them focused on the big picture, and reminding them of their goals and dreams, they feed into their negativity. Now, they, too, are worried the sky is falling. Pretty soon they start questioning everything, including themselves.
This is a prime example of someone who is a thermometer. Their attitude, mentality and behavior is effected by what's happening with their surroundings.
On the the other hand, you have people who are thermostats. When they come into a room you can feel their energy, excitement and enthusiasm. They control what's happening in their world. And when someone 'attempts' to change their temperature with drama, gossip, bad news, doubt, fear, etc. They immediately recognize it and move as far away from the threat as possible.
Thermostats work on their mentality constantly. They are optimists by nature and see the good, and the possibilities, in the world. They don't see problems they see opportunities. It isn't that they don't have challenges. It's how they handle those challenges that makes them who they are.
I have the same problems that everyone else encounters. However, I keep my focus on where I am going, and I don't allow speed bumps to throw me off course. I also surround myself with great mentors that help me keep my focus where it needs to be!
My pledge:
I choose to be a thermostat. I will ignite a deep down, burning, WHITE-HOT desire, passion, belief, and enthusiasm inside of anyone I encounter along my journey. I will always be in control of my thermometer. And I promise it will only have one setting....FIRE.
Choose wisely: Thermostat or Thermometer. Which one will it be?
