Past and Present
The history of Alesund can be traced back to the Viking period. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the town began to flourish with the growth of its fishing industry. Although the town was partially destroyed by a fire in 1904, it was completely rebuilt in Art Nouveau style—with dramatic towers, turrets and medieval ornaments that can be admired today.
