See where Hong Kong locals come to unwind at Cheung Chau, a car-free island of beaches, shops and temples. You will travel by bus to Central Ferry Pier, and board your boat to the island. Cantonese for “Long Island,” Cheung Chau is shaped like a dumbbell, with hills at the northern and southern ends. It was once a quiet fishing village and though not so sleepy anymore, Cheung Chau is still packed with charm. It is not, however, crowded with cars because its streets are too narrow for vehicles other than bikes and special mini-fire engines, ambulances, and police cars. The island boasts plenty of bicycle and hiking trails, and is beloved for its tiny temples, seafood restaurants, beaches and even a pirate’s hideout.
