Research has shown that caffeine is more than just a stimulant, it can actually trigger the production of ketones!
Caffeine can have an effect in the liver similar to that of a ketogenic diet or fasting in that it activates pathways that are impacted by and promote the breakdown of fat, otherwise known as lipolysis. Lipolysis increases the amount of free fatty acids in the liver, which can go on to be used directly as fuel - and if oxidized in large amounts - can promote the production of ketones.
In a 2017 study of 10 people, caffeine given at breakfast stimulated ketone production in a dose dependent fashion. So in a way, caffeine overlaps with the ketogenic diet! But the researchers point out that the relationship between ketosis and chronic caffeine use is not yet understood.
