Feeling tired and sad may have nothing to do with your partner or job. Maybe it’s just your thyroid. Some people don’t eat much food and still gain weight. So, what’s really going on? About 27 million people deal with hypothyroidism, experiencing weight gain, fatigue, dry skin and hair, foggy brain and depression.

Low hypothyroid function triggers the pituitary gland to send a signal and release a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) into the blood. However, the thyroid may still fail to do its job. This is what experts call hypothyroidism. Sometimes the thyroid doesn’t receive the signal to release TSH levels. This is called “secondary hypothyroidism.” The symptoms are similar in both conditions. According to researchers, you can relieve your condition by changing your eating habits and add some foods and supplements to your menu.

11 foods to heal your thyroid gland

  1. Apples

There’s a strong link between mercury/heavy metals and hypothyroidism. Pectins in apples decrease the levels of these metals by 74 percent. Pectin is also found in plums, pears and citruses. Don’t peel your apples, as the peel contains the highest amount of pectin

2.Brazil nuts

Selenium deficiency is one of the causes of hypothyroidism. Brazil nuts are packed with selenium, so make sure you eat them as snack. Selenium is also found in beef, turkey, chicken, tuna, sardines, eggs and legumes. Consider taking supplements, too. But, be careful, high selenium doses can be toxic.

3.Chickpeas

Fiber regulates constipation that’s also related to hypothyroidism. Chickpeas are packed with fiber and zinc. This mineral enhances your thyroid function. How to add chickpeas to your menu? Add them to your salads or just roast them with Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

4.Pumpkin seed

Eat roasted pumpkin seeds as snack. They are abundant in zinc. You can also puree raw seeds with some avocado, cilantro and lime. Zinc is also found in oysters, lobster, crab, legumes, nuts and sunflower seeds.

5.Seaweed

Iodine is important for your thyroid. It’s added to iodized salt, so most people don’t lack it. However, if your body needs more iodine, you can boost its intake by eating more seaweed, fish, dairy and eggs. How to eat seaweed? Soak it for 20 minutes in hot water. Drain, and serve with rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey, grated ginger and sliced scallions.

6.Yogurt

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder that’s related to hypothyroidism. It’s also related to vitamin D deficiency. Drink a cup of yogurt every day. Vitamin D is found in salmon, pork, and egg yolks. Sitting in the sun for 20 minutes is also a good idea.

7.Sardines

Eat sardines to optimize your thyroid function. Omega-3 fatty acids in sardines reduce inflammation and boost immunity. This is especially important if you are trying to lower you risk of Hashimoto’s disease. If you don’t like their taste, mask your sardines with tomato sauce, red pepper flakes and minced rosemary leaves. Serve them with penne pasta and Asiago cheese. Yum!

8.Guggul

It’s a herb that’s commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. According to modern research, guggul prevents hypothyroidism as it gives hormones greater power. Guggul is also known as gugulipid, guggulsterones or Commiphora mukul.

9.Vitamin A

Vitamin A is of utmost importance for your metabolism. A recent study found that 25,000 IU of vitamin A can reduce TSH blood levels. High TSH levels are the first sign of hypothyroidism. Find vitamin A supplements as preformed and provitamin A carotenoids. When it comes to preformed vitamin A supplements, you have to be really careful as high doses can be toxic. Take 5,000 IU per day.

10.Vitamin D

It boosts immunity. Many people lack it. The deficiency of this vitamin is related to Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune diseases. Hypothyroid patients often lack vitamin D which is why supplements are important.

11.Zinc

Zinc, copper, selenium and other trace minerals are important for your overall health. Any deficiency leads to hypothyroidism. A study confirmed that 26mg of zinc aid in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Thyroid-balancing supplements should contain zinc, copper and selenium.

For optimal results, combine these foods with cardio/aerobic exercise and medication (when necessary) to bring your thyroid back to normal.
