Head-to-Toe Anti-Aging Guide

Even if your routine is tried and true, your day-to-day habits may be preventing you from staying youthful. Find out how making simple tweaks to your daily regimen can help you look and feel young, healthy and vibrant.

The Brain

Starting in your late 20s, your hippocampus, the part of your brain responsible for memory and recall, shrinks an average of 1% a year as memory cells shrivel up and die. The shrinking is reversible and research shows that eating certain foods can actually increase blood flow to the brain and improve mental performance. Exercise your memory cells with mental tasks and eat brain protecting superfoods like nuts, seeds and berries to ensure mental vitality.

Eyes

You eyes can show the telltale signs of your age. Under-eye bags and dark circles may be the result of an iron deficiency. Add iron-rich foods like spinach, kidney beans and dark chocolate to your diet. Add a nighttime retinol cream to your moisturizing ritual to prevent and treat crow’s feet.

Ears

The most common type of hearing loss occurs when the inner ear becomes damaged, which often times may be due to aging and loud noises. Protect your ears by wearing earplugs when you’re in a loud environment and rest your ears for 24 hours afterward. Also prevent any further damage by lowering the volume when listening to music.

Neck

The skin on your neck can be thinner and more sensitive than the skin on your face. Prevent loss of elasticity and wrinkles by adding a few seconds to your moisturizing routine to make sure you cover your neck. The moisturizer you use for face can be effective for the neck so no need to dish out for several expensive creams!

Hair

You’ve heard the adage, “treat your wet hair like a delicate silk blouse.” Plucking gray hairs or brushing wet hair causes unnecessary damage to strands and weakens the hair follicle permanently. Incorporate hyper-moisturizing conditioning products into your hair routine and keep styling tools to low-heat settings to maintain lustrous locks.

Face

Smooth away fine lines and plump up skin cells with the help of acid. Depending on your skin type, add glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid to your beauty arsenal. As always, start your mornings with an SPF-infused moisturizer to protect your skin from damaging UV rays

Body

Promote cell renewal and detoxify your body with the holistic beauty treatment: dry brushing. Dry brushing stimulates the skin and eliminates the body of toxins by increasing circulation of blood flow and lymphatic fluid. Using a soft-bristle brush, start by brushing the soles of your feet and working slowly in circular motions upwards toward the heart. Do this 2 to 3 times a week for luminous skin.

A consistent moisturizing routine is the key to youthful and hydrated skin. The Mayo Clinic recommends choosing an oil-based moisturizer that contains petroleum if you have dry skin or try a water-based moisturizer that has a light, non-greasy feel if you have normal skin.
