Healthy Eating Under Quarantine

Posted by Bobby Brown on September 16, 2020 - 12:13pm

Up until last month you were probably eating an average of six meals a week in restaurants. That sounds like a lot, but if you are getting takeout for lunch on work days and going out to eat on Friday night, it’s not really that excessive. Now thanks to the novel coronavirus people are not eating out as much anymore and restaurants are struggling. At the same time, people are having to get creative with cooking what they have at home, which can get tedious when you are cooking three meals a day for members of your family that are usually at work or school. Fortunately there are plenty of ways to ensure your family is eating healthy under quarantine.

First, you don’t have to give up your restaurant meals in most places. Services like DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats have new protocols in place to ensure safety, and in many places they also are not charging delivery fees. This is a great way to support local restaurants and get a break from cooking, and there are plenty of healthy options out there. Many restaurants are also offering curbside takeout.

If you are grocery shopping, look for curbside pickup or delivery options whenever possible. When you cook, ensure you are getting the right balance of food groups at each meal: fruits and vegetables, protein, and grains should be in the correct proportions. If you aren’t sure what to make, there are websites where you can enter dietary restrictions and ingredients on hand to find new recipes to try.
