Healthy Habits for the Busy Individual

Healthy Habits

It is definitely possible to maintain a healthy lifestyle even when you’re loaded with responsibilities and have little time to stop and smell the proverbial roses. Taking good care of yourself will help you stay positive and proactive in spite of the demands that you’re facing. Below are several healthy habits that busy people can maintain in order to keep their energy levels high and to preserve their physical and mental well-being.

Eating Good While On the Go

Diet is often the first thing that suffers when people get busy. Rather than passing through the drive-through window or purchasing your lunch from the vending machine, make sure to put together something simple and healthy at home. Grab a few pieces of fruit, a sandwich or take a container of leftovers. You can shop for fresh, healthful items that are easy to put together such as pasta or salad kits. When you do have time to cook, make more food than you actually need so that you’ll have plenty of homemade meals that you can enjoy on the go.

Diaphragmatic Breathing

Take some time to use good breathing techniques throughout the day to clear your mind and limit your stress. Diaphragmatic breathing is a great way to eliminate negative thoughts and energy. Rather than hitching your shoulders and expanding your lung cavity while breathing in, focus on making the diaphragm extend outwards. You can place your hand on your belly and watch it expand with each breath. Breathe in deeply through your nose, hold your breath for several seconds and then exhale slowly through the mouth. This type of breathing delivers more oxygen to the blood and can positively alter brain wave activity, thereby producing a sense of calm.

Good Sleep Hygiene

No matter how busy you get, you have to take advantage of the restorative qualities of deep and restful sleep. Establish a feasible sleep routine and stick with it. Try to get at least six to eight hours of unbroken sleep each night for optimal focus and productivity.

Healthy Snacks

Keep a stash of healthy snacks at your desk or in the trunk of your car. You can purchase packages of raw almonds, dried fruits or granola bars. While not as satisfying as a real meal, these will help you avoid high-sugar, low-value foods when you need an energy boost.

Maintaining Proper Hydration

Don’t try to fuel yourself up with excess amounts of coffee or energy drinks. These will create short energy spikes and long, unpleasant crashes. Try sipping at a large bottle of water throughout the day instead. Keeping yourself properly hydrated is one of the best things that you can do to maintain high energy and good mental focus.

Routine Exercise

Make an effort to workout at least three times per week. Routine exercise is great for stress management and it will also help you challenge any muscles that have gone unused while sitting at your desk. Your exercise plan can include long outdoor walks or participation in a local dance or yoga class. Engaging in fitness activities that have a strong social component can be doubly beneficial given that social engagement is key for maintaining good mental health and overall balance.
