Did you know that ketones may help rescue one of the common features of many neurodegenerative diseases?

Our brain uses 20% of the energy our body requires, even though it only accounts for 2% of our body weight. A brain unable to meet its energetic demands is predisposed to neurodegeneration. Unfortunately, as we age, and during the development of many neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and epilepsy, the brain exhibits impaired glucose metabolism. This means that even if we have plenty of glucose circulating in our blood, the brain may be unable to meet its energetic needs. Correcting this metabolic imbalance is key to helping prevent a vicious cycle of glucose hypometabolism followed by neuronal cell death, cognitive decline, and further brain metabolic deficiencies.

This is where ketones may offer a solution.

Ketones are known to be the only other primary fuel for the brain, and have been shown time and again to support the brain’s energy needs even in the case of impaired glucose metabolism. Restoring the energy status of the brain, through dietary ketosis or exogenous ketones, is a promising strategy to prevent or even reverse symptoms of cognitive decline and neurodegeneration, and an active area of research in many labs.
