Key statistics regarding stomach cancer and its survival rates

Key statistics regarding stomach cancer and its survival rates

Stomach cancer is also known as gastric cancer. Cancer, in this case, begins in the cells that form the superficial lining of the stomach, which is known as the mucosa. The types of stomach cancer include the following:

  • Adenocarcinoma
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor
  • Lymphoma
  • Carcinoid tumor

There are plenty of studies conducted on the different areas associated with stomach cancer. Here are some staggering key facts related to this disorder:

Overall deaths caused by stomach cancer

  • It is estimated that approximately 26,240 different cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed.
  • Out of this, a majority of the cases would affect men, while only some cases would occur for women.
  • Another staggering statistic regarding this disorder suggests that a total estimate of ten thousand eight hundred people will die from stomach cancer.
  • The estimated deaths caused by this particular type of cancer would be more in men than in women.

Statistics regarding the age of the affected patients

  • Studies suggest that stomach cancer would mainly be found in people who belong to an older age group.
  • The average age of patients diagnosed with stomach cancer is 68. It is also seen that around six out of ten people diagnosed with this type of cancer are aged around 65 years or more.

Gender-wise statistics

  • Statistics also suggest that the risk of a man getting stomach cancer is somewhere around one out of every 95 people.
  • For women, the chance is much lesser, and it is approximately around one out of every 154 women.

There has been a progression in the country with a reduction in the cases of stomach cancer.

  • It was until the late 1930s that stomach cancer was the type that was on the top of the list as the cause of deaths caused by cancer in the citizens of the country.
  • However, now studies suggest that these cases have reduced by 1.5% since the last decade.

Statistics on survival rates
These rates are just an estimate and merely provide an idea regarding the success of the treatment:

  • The survival rate of stage IA is 94%, which is quite high for stomach cancer
  • Stage IB’s survival rate is slightly lower, at a rate of 88%
  • As for stage IIA, the survival rate is around 82%
  • The survival rate of stage II-B is reported at around 68%
  • The survival rates for stage III of stomach cancer differs as it progresses. As for stage IIIA, the rate is around 54%, the rate reported for stage III-B is 36%, and stage IIIC is about 18%.

The aforementioned rate is reported based on the number of people who survive for more than five years after getting stomach cancer.

It is overwhelming to see that the cases of deaths due to stomach cancer have really reduced. It is probably the advanced forms of treatment and the diagnostic methods that help in the early detection of stomach cancer. This has really helped in starting the treatment early and hence the survival rates for the initial stages are much higher.
