Light weight training exercises throughout the week may benefit your aging brain. Over time, the brain starts to deteriorate through the breakdown of the white matter in it. This matter is responsible for sending messages throughout the brain, causing mental decline in old age. But a new study reported that aging adults can take preventative measures through exercise, “…Teresa Liu-Ambrose, a professor of physical therapy…was interested in weight training, because weight training strengthens and builds muscles. Our muscles, like our brains, tend to shrink with age, affecting how we move. Punier muscle mass generally results in slower, more-unsteady walking…then weight training, which strengthens and builds muscle, might be expected to alter that process and potentially keep aging brains and bodies healthier.” The study found that weight training can potentially impact the brain in a positive way if done frequently enough, Dr. Liu-Ambrose and her team recommended twice a week.
