Macro vs Micro
Most people are aware of how important macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats and protein) and vitamins are for health, but often forget how essential it is to replenish minerals and trace elements. In fact, without adequate consumption of minerals and trace elements, all of the other nutrients cannot be optimally absorbed or work to their full effect in the body.
So what are micronutrients?
Micronutrients or minerals are inorganic substances, derived from rocks, soil or water. Micronutrients are required by the body in smaller amounts to macronutrients, however this does not mean they are less important. They have vital functions in the body and a lack of even one element can offset and imbalance all the other elements which can in turn negatively affect our health. Minerals and trace elements cannot be made by the body, but are lost multiple times throughout the day and therefore must be replenished daily.

Why do we need minerals and trace elements?
Minerals and trace elements are needed for every aspect of health at a cellular level.
The human body is made up of trillions of cells which are constantly regenerating, albeit with varying lifespans, therefore micronutrients are required to ensure that our cellular regeneration is optimised and that our cells, in their different forms are sufficiently nourished so they operate efficiently.
Whilst certain foods are more mineral-rich to others, due to intensive modern farming, our food is no longer as mineral rich as before, so it is difficult to rely on food alone to get adequate amounts of minerals and trace elements to keep our cells in optimum health.
There are a myriad of supplements on the market today, many promising huge benefits but often under delivering In results, this is generally because they are in synthetic form and do not contain the full spectrum of minerals and trace elements that our cells require. In order to be easily absorbed, they also need to be bioavailable, which is often not the case and many also contain nasty additional ingredients such as sugars, preservatives and sweeteners.
