Bring a widow, having a low body mass index, and having trouble sleeping in middle age could raise your risk for dementia, say Boston University School of Medicine researchers.

To find factors that could influence dementia risk later in life, they applied machine learning techniques – using computers to identify patterns in statistical data without specifically programming them to locate them – on data from the long-term Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948. Specifically, they used data gathered from 1979 to 1983 and focused on risk factors for dementia related to demographics and lifestyle.

Worldwide, dementia is the leading cause of disability in older adults, and in the United States, 5.7 million people currently live with Alzheimer’s disease – a number that’s expected to rise to 14 million by 2050.
