Mississippi River

Posted by Bobby Brown on February 10, 2020 - 6:00am

Cruise the Mississippi, from New Orleans, on The Newest Modern Riverboat, American Harmony.

You may have cruised many rivers around the world, from the Danube to the Me Kong, but never the mighty Mississippi. Maybe you were put off by the older paddlewheel-style riverboats that had been the only option and didn't feel comfortable about it.

But now you have a choice. The newest ship from AMERICAN CRUISE LINES, groundbreaking series of five modern riverboats, American Harmony, departs on its inaugural Mississippi River cruise from New Orleans on August 17.

Savvy travelers can combine a cruise on America's greatest river, enjoying the local food, music, architecture and historic sites of some of America's most interesting cities.
And you can add on a longer stay in New Orleans the Big Easy offers nightlife, vibrant music, and a cuisine reflecting its French, African and American cultures. Significant in the history of American-built ships on the Mississippi River, a paddlewheeler named the New Orleans was the first steamboat to make the historic voyage from Pittsburgh to New Orleans in 1811.

American Cruise Lines’ modern riverboats are the first major style departure from those classic paddlewheel riverboats, plying the Mississippi since the early 1800s.

In addition to 2019’s new American Harmony, the company introduced their modern series flagship, American Song, on the Mississippi in 2018. They plan to introduce their third modern riverboat, American Jazz, on the Mississippi in 2020.

American Cruise Lines has been offering cruises on the Mississippi River for over 30 years, and currently operates over nine Mississippi River itineraries including holiday and theme cruises.

The line offers three distinct small ship styles, accommodating 100-200 guests: new modern riverboats (like American Harmony), Victorian-style paddlewheelers, and small coastal cruise ships.
