Sedentary people can reduce their risk of heart disease

Posted by Bobby Brown on June 09, 2025 - 10:57pm

A recent study found that even the most sedentary people can reduce their risk of heart disease, cancer, and early death by simply walking more each day. The researchers discovered that incorporating more steps into your daily routine can help counteract the harmful effects of sitting too much, something many of us do because of desk jobs or other sedentary activities.

It’s well-known that sitting for long periods can increase the risk of serious health problems like cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and diabetes. But the study showed that the more steps people took, even if they were otherwise inactive, the lower their risk of developing these conditions and the less likely they were to die prematurely. This is great news for anyone with a sedentary lifestyle, as it means that just adding a few more steps to your daily routine can make a difference.

The study, which analyzed data from over 72,000 participants, revealed that people who took about 9,000 to 10,000 steps a day had the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease and early death. But even those who walked between 4,000 and 4,500 steps a day saw significant health benefits. The important thing is that any increase in daily steps was linked to a lower risk of death and heart disease, no matter how sedentary the person was.

Researchers emphasized that walking alone won’t cancel out the risks of sitting for too long, but it does show that even small changes in your activity level can help improve your health. So, if you’ve got a desk job or spend most of the day sitting, you don’t have to feel completely doomed—just try to get up and walk around a little more throughout the day.
