Sensory stimulation to the brain comes in all shapes and sizes:
1. Mental Rehearsal: Involves imagined, mental practice of performing a task as opposed to actual practice. For example, a basketball player imagining shooting the perfect free throw over and over again without actually moving a muscle.
2. Olfactory: Smelling fragrances such as candles, coffee, peanut butter and essential oils.
3. Gustatory: Tasting different tastes and flavors such as sweet, salty or sour.
4. Auditory: Listening to your favorite tunes or calming environmental noises such as waves in the ocean or rain drops.
5. Proprioception: Motion is lotion for the brain. Movement activates muscle spindles and joint mechanoreceptors that send signals to the brain regarding body position and posture.
6. Vision: Looking at different art or environmental scenery or even short spans of fun and engaging video games.
7. Tactile: Different textures on the skin such as vibration and light touch or even a nice massage
