Middle age is a period of decreasing physical activity for most people, according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology in September 2018.

At the start of the study, 962 participants, ages 38 to 50, in four American cities wore a device (accelerometer) that measured their movement during most waking hours for a week. Ten years later, they repeated the measurement, which showed that on average they had reduced light physical activity (such as walking) by 30 minutes a day, reduced moderate to vigorous activity by 8 minutes, and increased sedentary behavior by 38 minutes.

Much research has linked increased sedentary time to poorer health. This is bad news in middle age, which is “a particularly vulnerable time during adulthood because it corresponds to a period when risk of disease and disability escalates,” the researchers noted
