Smart Snacks

Posted by Bobby Brown on February 21, 2021 - 10:05pm

Chips and dip, pizza, wings and beer can pack in more than 2,500 calories—more than you need in an entire day! Try these 5 winning substitutions that are full of favor, not calories.

Instead of Fried Chips…
Serve a veggie platter and baked chips.
High-crunch, lo-cal veggies are a game day essential. They’re loaded with filling fiber and have less than 50 calories per cup. I serve a large tray of crunchy carrots, cauliflower, celery, sugar snap peas, grape tomatoes, broccoli, and bell pepper.

You can count on a “blitz” on chips at every Super Bowl party. To be prepared, look for baked chips that shave about 30 calories per ounce (15-20 chips) compared to fried chips. For a healthier tortilla chip, I like lentil- or bean-based options because they provide some fiber and protein compared to other chips.

Instead of Creamy Dips…
Serve black bean dip, hummus and a slimmer guac.
Black bean dip and hummus are low in saturated fat and provide filling protein and fiber. Since it’s not a Super Bowl party without guac, I lighten up traditional guacamole by infusing more veggies to balance out the fat in the avocados. For my favorite ‘skinny guacamole’, check out this recipe.

Instead of Pizza…
Serve Pasta Caprese Salad
Pizza can pack in more than 300 calories a slice, so for a lighter option, you’ll score big with these Pasta Caprese Salad Skewers. They’re a delicious twist on a caprese salad that are sure to be the MVP of your party. What’s more, pasta is a low-glycemic complex carb that helps keep you satisfied. Added bonus: you can make them in minutes.

Instead of Beef and Cheese Nachos…
Serve meat-free, vegetarian nachos.
Beef- and cheese-rich nachos can be a waistline-wrecker, with over 500 calories and nearly 10 grams of sat fat per serving. In place of beef, I’ll I make a vegetarian nacho platter using an alternative to ground beef (i.e., soy or bean crumbles). Here’s my favorite loaded nacho recipe that has half the calories of traditional nachos. And if you skip the cheese, it’s vegan-friendly.

Instead of Regular Beer
Serve light and ultra-light brews.
Since beer is considered an official food group of Super Bowl, opt for light beers that have 95-100 calories per bottle compared to 150 calories in a regular beer. There are even several options that have around 50-60 calories, or about 100 calories less per bottle than a regular beer. And if you want to be a nutritional all-star, skip alcohol altogether and opt for sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea.

Kevin Jacobson I try to eat healthy and choose my snacks well. You need to cheat occasionally and treat yourself. Some good tips here that I will try.
