Social Media and Your Brain

Posted by Bobby Brown on November 17, 2021 - 4:44pm

A new large, national study from the University of Arkansas has for the first time showed a link between depression and social media use over time. Many have long suspected the consequences of long term social media use, and finally we are now seeing research behind it.

The study showed that young adults who increased their use of social media were significantly more likely to develop depression within six months.

Social media is a double-edged sword. Whilst it genuinely offers a means of learning from others, as well as the opportunity to form new and maintain old relationships, it can also lead to poor mental health if used unwisely.

So perhaps, with this new study in mind, we can reflect on how social media is serving us and how we can form healthy boundaries with platforms like instagram. Here are some initial tips to take into considerations:

- Create a social media or phone curfew

- Turn off your notifications during set periods of the day

- Go for a walk without your phone

- Unfollow people who don't make you feel good
