Several spices are prized as medicinal herbs. And eating spices has been shown in numerous studies to benefit heart disease and lower the incidence of cancer. Now, a new study shows that eating more spicy food also makes you live longer. .
This massive study followed nearly half a million Chinese adults (487,375 to be exact) for seven years. It found that the risk of dying from any cause during the study was 10% lower for people who ate spicy food one or two days a week compared to people who ate spicy food less than once a week. Eating spicy food even more often lowered the risk that you would die during the seven year study even more. Eating spicy foods three to seven days a week lowered the risk of dying from any cause by 14%.
In terms of specific diseases, eating more spicy food significantly reduced the risk of dying from cancer, ischemic heart isease and respiratory disease. For women, spicy food also reduced the risk of dying from an infection.
