You’ve probably seen the graphic of the “success iceberg” before. On the surface you see a large mass, but what you don’t realize is that 90% of an iceberg is actually unseen and underwater. It’s sometimes forgotten that people who find great success are buoyed by their own 90% mass of hard work, rejection, near misses, early mornings, sleepless nights and daily action. The reality is that there are no such things as overnight successes.
There are countless stories of people who persevered through setbacks to become an “overnight success.” Colonel Sanders shopped his secret herbs and spices around to over 1000 potential franchisees before someone in (of all places) Salt Lake City, Utah, said ‘yes.’ What would have happened if Colonel Sanders decided to quit at 999? We wouldn’t have one of the biggest fast food chains of all time.
Famous inventor, Thomas Edison, is another who not only overcame the naysayers, but many “failures.” He was famously quoted as saying, “I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work,” and, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try one more time.”
So, what is it that gave our diamonds their shine? The first part is that they made a decision. Not the decision to join ASEA - that’s the easy part! They made a decision to do whatever it takes to be successful. If you have an absolute belief in your vision, nothing else matters. Without a clear vision and full belief in that vision you will find constant obstacles. With belief in your vision you will either find or make a way in spite of the obstacles. I can’t imagine any of the ambassador diamonds give one thought to those that told them ‘no’ along the way. It’s because their belief in their vision was far greater than what one person says or thinks.
Consistency is the second part of the equation. Consistently taking action that will move them closer to their goal. You must be willing to commit to developing yourself because you are the greatest possible investment you can make in life. Daily personal development is key. You must also be consistent in your building activities. Making one contact a week and waiting for your business to explode is a surefire way to disappointment. You must put yourself in enough situations to succeed, in order to actually succeed.Yes, this opens you to the possibility of rejection, but the more you succeed, the more the the voice of the naysayers fade into oblivion.
You need to ask yourself these three questions. Is your vision big enough? Do you have full buy-in and belief in that vision? Do your actions match your vision and belief? If all three are aligned, you’re ready to take on the Titanic!
