Sugar-free drinks can do a number on your teeth.

Posted by Bobby Brown on June 14, 2020 - 2:16pm

Sugar-free drinks can do a number on your teeth. The chemicals that are added in sugar-free foods and drinks to make them sugar-free can be extremely damaging to your tooth enamel. “While sugar-free foods won’t lead directly to cavities, the researchers found that many can strip away a tooth’s outer layer — leading to chalkiness of the tooth’s surface, pitting, opacity, tooth sensitivity and other issues. That’s because they contain acids like phosphoric acid (found in colas) or citric acid (found mainly in lemon and lime flavored drinks).” Researchers recommend leaving sugar and sugar-free beverages alone and instead drinking water.

Diet drinks can increase alcohol concentrated in your breath. A small study found that even though diet drinks are lower in calories, they are not necessarily the best thing to include in a mixed drink. “For a low amount of alcohol, the researchers found breath alcohol concentrations were about 22 percent higher when participants had their beverages mixed with diet soda rather than regular soda.…alcohol left the stomach and entered the bloodstream faster when people used diet drinks in their mixed beverages, compared to when they used regularly sweetened drinks.” The researchers clarified that the effects of diet mixed drinks can be minor to non-existent if alcohol is consumed in moderation and accompanied by food.

Eating walnuts may help your daily diet. Some people—especially those trying to lose weight—are skeptical about eating too many nuts because they are so high in fat and calories, but a recent study found that they are most likely beneficial for your body regardless. “…the study, in which they recruited people who were at high risk of developing diabetes…spent six months adding walnuts to their diet then another six months taking walnuts out of their diet…Dr. Katz found was that regardless of whether the people adjusted their daily calories or not, the quality of every participant’s diet improved.” If you’re trying to lose weight, want to make your diet healthier, or are just looking for a snack, walnuts may be the way to go.
