The Best Ways to Stay Active as a Senior

Posted by Bobby Brown on August 10, 2020 - 2:18pm

For many seniors, remaining active as they age can pose a major challenge. Maybe you’re not able to play sports anymore or move as quickly as you used to, but there are still plenty of ways to keep activity levels high.

Remaining active is important, especially for seniors as it helps prevent illness and chronic disease, helps improve or maintain mobility, and even benefits mental health. Here’s a look at some awesome and fun ways to stay active as a senior:

WALKING

Walking is an easy way to stay active and it doesn’t require anything special, just your own two feet. You can go for walks outside around town, find a scenic path, or use a treadmill if the weather isn’t nice. Not only does going for a walk provide a great opportunity to chat with a walking partner, but it’s also a great way to burn some calories and keep your cardiovascular health strong.

WATER AEROBICS

Water aerobics classes are a great way to remain active and social for senior citizens. Usually offered at your local pool or fitness center, water aerobics is an excellent way to get exercise and stay healthy in a group setting. These structured classes are often run by an instructor and tailored specifically for seniors!

GARDENING

Gardening is a perfect way to stay active in the warmer months, and it also provides the benefit of free food! Growing and tending to a small vegetable garden keeps you active right at home, and it is a great way to relax and decompress while staying active. Plus, the addition of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet are an excellent way to make sure you’re getting the right nutrients.

While there are countless ways to remain active as a senior, these are a few simple, safe, and inexpensive options to keep moving and possibly even make some new friends. Remaining active later in life can be seen as a challenge but looking at simple activities like these can make it fun and easy to do.
