Do you worry about memory loss? Take heart, you’re not alone! Consider these seven simple tips that have been shown effective in dusting away the forgetfulness cobwebs.*

  1. Use it or lose it: Just like physical exercise keeps your body stay in shape, mentally stimulating activities keep your brain fit. Do crossword puzzles, take alternate driving routes or learn to play a musical instrument.
  2. Get Friendly: Reach out to friends and loved ones. Social interaction staves off depression and stress, which both can contribute to memory loss.
  3. Organization is key: Chances are if your house is cluttered, than your brain is too. Jot down tasks and and to-do’s in a special notebook or electronic planner. Set aside a specific place for your wallet, keys and cell phone.
  4. Focus: Keep multitasking to a minimum. Try connecting what you’re trying to remember to a favorite song or another familiar idea.
  5. Feed Your brain: We’ve all heard about the benefits of a heart-healthy diet, but did you know it’s also good for your brain? Your diet should include fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meat and fish, and plenty of water.
  6. Exercise daily: Simply put, physical activity increases blood flow to the entire body, including your brain. Aim to exercise 30 minutes a day, at least five times a week.
  7. Manage chronic conditions: If you have a chronic condition, follow your doctor’s recommendations to a tee. The better your health, the better your memory. Also, various medications can impact memory.

* If memory loss affects your ability to complete daily activities, consult your doctor.
