For people with type 2 diabetes, the cardioprotective effect of exercise is particularly important. Those with type 2 diabetes are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those without diabetes, and inactivity increases the risk.

A recent study of more than 15,000 Swedes with type 2 diabetes (average age 60), published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, found that those who rarely exercised at the start of the study were 25 percent more likely to have a heart attack or stroke over a five-year period, and 70 percent more likely to die from one, than those who were most active. Those who remained inactive throughout the study faced even worse odds.
