Visit the most remarkable building in Tibet, the imposing Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enormous in scope, the 13-story structure has been home to the Dalai Lama since the 7th century and stands as Tibet’s most recognizable landmark. It boasts more than 1,000 rooms, including those in the White Palace (former home of the Dalai Lama) and Red Palace (devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer), and a total of 10,000 side chapels and shrines. Extended to its present size by the 13th Dalai Lama, it covers an area of nearly 300,000 square feet. This incredible building, with its vast red-and-white facade, sits high on Marpo Ri Hill, visible from all corners of Lhasa. It has served as home to his eminence as well as a monastery and seminary. Today, much of it is a museum, which you will explore with your guide and peruse on your own.
