You may have heard someone in a movie say, “Meet me on the Lido Deck,” but you weren’t sure what that meant.

The word lido is an Italian word for “beach,” and refers to the area where swimming, sun bathing, or water sports are enjoyed. It also refers to a public outdoor swimming pool and the area around it.

In Italy, there are several beach locations that have the word lido in their names, such as Lido di Venezia, also called Lido, or Venice Lido, which is a seven mile long sandbar near Venice. it’s been speculated that the word lido made its way into the English language in the late 19th century, when people returned to England from visiting places such as Lido Di Venezia, which was a popular place for bathing in the sea.

On a cruise ship, the Lido Deck refers to the deck where the outdoor pool and related facilities are located.
