What Can I Eat to Reduce an Enlarged Prostate?

Posted by Bobby Brown on October 09, 2020 - 6:58pm Edited 10/15 at 2:26pm

Foods to eat for a healthy prostate.

Answer:

What you eat can have a significant impact on prostate health, since certain foods affect testosterone and other hormones in your body. Here are some of the best foods you can eat to prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is commonly known as enlarged prostate:

Fish, nuts, and seeds

The omega-3 fatty acids found in both fish and nuts reduce inflammation throughout the body. Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and trout are rich in these fatty acids. Nuts and seeds such as walnuts, chia seeds, ground flax seed, sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds are rich in both omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. Low levels of dietary zinc have been linked to a higher risk of BPH and prostate cancer, so including more of these foods in your diet can reduce your risk.

Fruits and vegetables

Green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli), and berries are all rich in antioxidants and have been linked to reduced risk of prostate cancer and BPH. Citrus fruits (such as oranges, limes, lemons, and grapefruit) and bell peppers are high in vitamin C and may also protect prostate health. Tomatoes contain lycopene — an antioxidant that may help prevent prostate cancer and reduce the progression of BPH. Other foods high in lycopene include watermelon, pink grapefruit, papaya, and apricots.

Soy products

Isoflavones found in soy have been linked to reduced risk of BPH. Tofu, soybeans, soy milk and yogurt, and tempeh are rich in soy isoflavones.

Avocados

Avocados contain beta-sitosterol, which has been shown to help reduce symptoms associated with enlarged prostate. Beta-sitosterol can also help strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation and pain. Other sources of the plant sterol are pumpkin seeds, pecans, and wheat germ.

What not to eat

Research has linked a diet rich in meat and dairy products to increased risk of BPH and prostate cancer. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol intake, which also increases your risk for these conditions.

Strive to maintain a healthy weight, since being overweight is a risk factor for BPH.
