What is it that sets us apart from other species

Posted by Bobby Brown on December 29, 2021 - 8:29pm

What is it that sets us apart from other species & made human beings the dominant species on this planet? Amongst many other attributes, the human brain & in particular the neo cortex & in particular; the large prefrontal cortex that we are all gifted with, affords humans the powers of critical, analytical thinking, will power & so much more! The prefrontal cortex the part of the brain that helps you evaluate your environment and take control of your own thoughts. It’s the brain structure that makes us truly human.

__

 - The prefrontal cortex, much like the rest of the brain, requires fuel & activation to maintain function, which is to say that it operates under the laws of use it or lose it. As we go through life, we accumulate experiences that shape who we are. Indeed, in those first seven years of life, we are literally, constantly downloading information. Learning from our parents, setting up the framework for brain function & how it is we plan to engage with others & the world around us. Neuroplasticity is the miraculous process of the brain constantly remodelling itself as it learns its way, via new experiences, thoughts & learned information, throughout life.

__

 - We like to think of ourselves as the most highly evolved species on the planet & if this is truly the case, then the objective of each life lived really should be aimed at further evolution throughout the course of life & this takes shape via life long learning which, harnesses neuroplasticity to create new connections in the brain as we advance our way through life. When we shut off from new information or reject things that we know nothing about, it’s more a resistance to both evolution & expansion of the brain’s capabilities as neuroplasticity is harnessed to reinforce new ways to shut off from growth, new learnings & new information. If that happens, it’s a waste of the most magnificent piece of hardware in our known universe.

__

 - Always stay open to new possibilities & new ways of thinking. Do your magnificent brain justice & continue to learn your way through life
