We all have habits some of these habits are beneficial for our success, whereas others hold us back or derail our success.
A habit is defined as, "a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up".
Our habits are developed over time through repetition and are a core part of who we are, as they either make or break us.
Studies have shown that 40-50% of our daily lives are a product of habit, this is known as 'automaticity' where our brain forms "habit loops" to reinforce behavior and run on autopilot so that our brains aren't overwhelmed with all that we have to do throughout the day.
This means that nearly half our lives are a product of habit, so with that being said it's vital for us to build strong, positive, healthy habits that serve us and get rid of negative, unhealthy habits that harm us.
This is easier said than done though because as stated earlier habits become habits through repetition and become engraved in our subconscious to where we act unconsciously on these habits.
Both our good and bad habits operate this way, so the addition of a good habit and subtraction of a bad one are fairly similar processes, as it's best to substitute a good habit in place of a bad habit because by replacing one habit for another the process becomes easier.
First, before anything, we must fully believe that we are capable of changing our habits because if we don't believe in ourselves we'll just fall back into our same old ways when things get tough.
Next, we need to really want to change our habits and our lives because if it's not something we want then this process becomes nearly impossible, change is only lasting when we desire and commit to it.
Then we have to make sure our abilities line up with the new habit we're trying to develop and take small simple steps to get us there.
For example, if you're new goal is to run a mile every day but you haven't run in ages, you're first simple step should be simply putting your running shoes on, then taking a short walk, then taking a long walk, then picking up the pace and jogging, then jogging a little faster, then jogging a little farther, slowly taking small steps until you have the ability to accomplish your goal.
These small simple steps lead to many micro wins that will build up and eventually lead to a macro win. It's truly amazing the huge difference just changing one to two small habits a day can have on your life down the road.
By combining belief, want, and small simple steps we are able to begin to change our habits to our liking, allowing our habits to serve us and make us better, instead of holding us hostage and keeping us the same.
Today, ask yourself what habits you have that are serving you? Which ones are derailing you? And figure out small simple steps you can take starting now to change your habits and begin creating the life you desire.
