Blockchain meets AI for sustainable and EUDR-compliant coffee production

Smallholder coffee farmers are in danger of losing touch with international markets due to upcoming regulations. Here’s how blockchain and AI can help them.

Originating in Africa and expanding over Asia and the Americas, coffee has made its way to the cup of people from all around the world. As an industry that has grown to be worth $460 billion, it is subject to multifaceted debates.

For coffee enthusiasts, the question might be whether the coffee beans are over-roasted or if the blend contains high-quality beans. As for activists, coffee production is a cause for environmental and social concerns.

Coffee is a commodity widely associated with deforestation. And income disparities are a long-standing issue that threaten the existence of small-scale producers. With the awareness about such issues increasing, the demand for ethical sourcing among consumers has reached high levels. Three out of four coffee drinkers place importance on sustainable and eco-friendly production methods, as well as farmers being fairly compensated. Read More

Q3 2024 saw a decline in the number of crypto hacks, but the value of assets stolen spiked, with $753 million lost across 155 incidents.

The third quarter of 2024 has witnessed a decrease in the total number of reported crypto hacks, but a spike in the value of assets stolen.

According to an Oct. 1 report by cybersecurity firm CertiK, the overall financial damage surged by approximately 9.5%, with a total of $753 million taken from investors across 155 incidents.

The Ethereum network suffered the most security incidents, with 86 hacks, scams and exploits costing over $387 million.

The largest incident occurred on Aug. 19, when a Bitcoin whale lost 4,064 Bitcoin, worth around $238 million, in an apparent wallet compromise.

Another major theft occurred at India-based crypto exchange WazirX, through which over $235 million was stolen. The hack contributed to a significant portion of the quarter’s losses.

Asset Management Firm Bitwise Files for Spot XRP ETF

Asset management firm Bitwise has initiated the process to establish an XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF). Details of the filing were confirmed on the Delaware Division of Corporations website and by a Bitwise spokesperson.

The documentation reveals that an entity named Bitwise XRP ETF was officially registered with Delaware’s Division of Corporations on Monday. CSC Delaware Trust Company is listed as the registered agent. This action represents an early stage in the process to potentially list and trade ETF shares tied to XRP.

While this filing suggests progress, it does not indicate an immediate submission to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Currently, no spot XRP ETF has been authorized by the regulator, and any forthcoming filing could face hurdles. Bitwise’s application is set against the backdrop of Ripple Labs’ ongoing legal challenges with the SEC over the classification of XRP. The SEC has until Oct. 7 to appeal a ruling by District Judge Analisa Torres concerning XRP’s programmatic sales. Read More

What Is the Best Way To Secure My Bitcoin

The question still comes up – is crypto too complex for the ‘average user’ to understand?

The answer seems straightforward. Bitcoin quickly became a cultural phenomenon – appearing in rap songs and movies – and then was adopted by national governments and major corporations.

It is safe to say that the people get it.

Up to now, users have happily taken advantage of custodial exchanges to hold their digital assets when they don’t have the right hardware devices or living situation for self-custody.

Many others successfully store digital assets on a secure mobile phone with no problems.

It is clear that people are figuring out how to not only buy and sell digital assets, but how to store them as well.

The question, then, is perhaps less about whether or not crypto is too complex and more about whether or not our technical education worldwide suffices for the modern age. Read More

LayerZero Labs, Eigen Labs raise the stakes on cross-chain transactions

The two firms co-developed the Cryptoeconomic DVN framework, bringing more security to decentralized networks through economic incentives.

The team behind Ethereum re-staking protocol EigenLayer and cross-chain messaging protocol LayerZero introduced a system to make cross-chain communication more secure.

In a blog post on Oct. 2, LayerZero Labs announced a partnership with Eigen Labs and introduced a framework for “CryptoEconomic Decentralized Verifier Networks” (DVNs).

The system combines technical verification with financial incentives to ensure secure cross-chain messaging.

It solves several issues regarding cross-chain security, including a lack of economic incentives to ensure trust, limited participation in security and inflexibility in security models.

DVNs leverage cryptoeconomic security, in which verifiers stake assets that can be taken away or “slashed” if they act dishonestly or make mistakes.

The system has four primary mechanisms to ensure cross-chain communication security. Read More

Ethereum Game 'Moonray' Expanding to Mobile With New Auto-Battler

After an early access PC launch and two graphic novels, the makers of Moonray are gearing up to debut a new mobile game.

The makers of Ethereum action game Moonray have announced a mobile auto-battler set to release early next year to complement its flagship battle arena game. The spinoff game will be set in the same “post-human” world as the original, using the same assets, and will let Moonray token holders unlock special content and rewards.

An auto-battler, also referred to as an “auto chess” game, is a strategy subgenre where gamers place characters on a board that then automatically fight the opposition. Riot’s Teamfight Tactics is the most popular example, but Moonray’s entry into the genre claims to have “more in-depth resource management and counter play,” as well as Web3 integration.

This new title will exist in the broader Moonray “post-human” universe, currently led by its sci-fi combat arena game and graphic novels. The early access version of the original PC game launched on the Epic Games Store in July, offering a play-to-airdrop campaign with rewards for players. Read More
