“...Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” Ephesians 6:17

In spiritual battle, you must use God’s Truth to fight the lies of the enemy (Satan). Jesus used scripture to fight Satan’s temptations in Matthew 4. Here are five ways that memorizing scripture will help prepare you for Spiritual Battle.

1. Your Desires Change
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

Focusing your mind on God’s Word will cause your desires to line up with God’s desires. You will start becoming more like Christ, which will produce Godly characteristics in your life such as love, peace, and purity. (Philippians 4:8)

2. You Gain Strength to Fight Temptation
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11).

When you memorize scriptures about the sins you struggle with, they help warn you and guide you in the right direction when you face those temptations.

3. You’ll Have Clear Direction
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105).

Thinking about scripture throughout your day will help you understand God’s ways and enable you to apply His principles in your life decisions.

4. You’ll Be Ready to Share the Gospel
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believer in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:13-14)

Jesus gave us eternal life, and He wants us to tell others so they can be free. How can they believe if no one tells them? (Romans 10:13-15) When you memorize verses, you are ready to share the Good News with others.

5. Your Prayers Become More Powerful
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God; That if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if he hears us, we know that we have what we asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15).

Jesus taught us to pray, “God’s Will be done.” How can you pray for God’s Will if you don’t know it? Using God’s own words from scripture gives power and confidence to your prayers.

There is no better ally in battle than God Himself, so call on Him and repeat His promises to strengthen your faith. (Ephesians 6:18)
