Wintermute, a major crypto market maker, summarizes the over-the-counter (OTC) crypto market in the first half of 2025. Key findings indicate that institutional investors focused on major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, while retail investors ventured into altcoins, with a notable increase in new tokens traded. The report also highlights a significant rise in OTC options trading (412% increase) and Contracts for Difference (CFDs), alongside growing engagement with tokenized equity and Real World Assets (RWAs) from traditional finance institutions.
Furthermore, the report notes improved regulatory clarity with the EU's MiCA bill and the US Genius Act. OTC spot volumes grew by 18%, outperforming centralized exchanges, suggesting institutions prefer OTC for large trades. While early 2025 saw optimism with Bitcoin breaking $100,000, market momentum stabilized, leading to reduced volatility and no dominant market theme. The report also observed a consolidation of capital around "currency networks," "general-purpose blockchain networks," and "blockchain utility and tools," with stablecoins gaining traction over memecoins. Wintermute's predictions for 2025 were largely accurate, with six out of nine proving correct.
