Hey, I want you to you to meet someone, it's the LPL enzyme.   His formal name is LipoProtein Lipase and depending on where he is, he's either a friend or foe!

Every cell in the body has doors that you've got to open, with just the right key.  The LPL enzyme sticks out from various cells to let fat come in.  They are located in (3) main areas, on Fat Cells, Muscle Tissue, and on the Liver.  If the LPL receptors are located on the muscle, they shuttle fat in to the muscle to be used for fuel, if they are on fat cells, they make them bigger, and if they are on the liver, they are used for storage and energy.

These LPL receptors are what causes fat distribution.  Have you ever notice how women carry their weight on the hips and thighs, while men carry their "spare tire" around their waist?  That's because these LPL's are found in different areas depending on gender, genetics (my stomach stays flat when I gain weight, but my "love handles" get handle-like!).

Why is this important to us?  It's because we want to deactivate the LPL on our fat cells and activate our LPL on our muscle cells.  You know what hormone controls that?  Insulin.  Insulin activates LPL on fat cells, specifically the ones on the abdomen (remember, the abdomen has no bones to protect it, like the rib cage, but still has very sensitive organs, so that's why fat accumulates there, to protect the area).  And Insulin will suppress the activity of LPL on muscle tissue, so when you eat a meal high in insulin activation (sugar, carbohydrates), you can't use those nutrients for energy...because the door is locked!

So what do you do?  You follow the HBC Nutrition Plan.  A plan specifically designed to inhibit the Insulin response and to activate fat breakdown and release (which we'll talk about later).  You exercise and focus on building muscle mass.  Why build muscle?  Because the more muscle you have, the more LPL you have, which then allows you to maintain  your weight for the long term.

Now you know why the weight you gain can't just go to the back of your hands and biceps!
