Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease involving persistent inflammation of multiple synovial  joints, which results in progressive tissue destruction of bone and cartilage. A variety of innate and adaptive effector cells, including neutrophils, mastocytes , T and B lymphocytes, and monocytes/macrophages, are involved in the development of inflammation. Activation of these cells leads to the production of cytokines and mediators responsible for inflammation. Among these leukocytes, monocytes/macrophages and T cells are regarded as important players in the pathogenesis of RA. Monocytes/macrophages, which are central to the pathophysiology of inflammation, have been found to be activated in RA and produce tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-x, which is important in initiating, propagation and maintaining synovial inflammation.

Microalgae contain substances of high biological value, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, amino acids (proteins), pigments, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.[40] Edible blue-green algae reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting NF-κB pathway in macrophages and splenocytes.[41] Consumption of edible blue green algae may also reduce risks of cataracts and age related macular degeneration.[42] It has also shown mitigative effects in animal models of non-alcohol related liver disease, such as steatohepatitis,[43] and Parkinson's disease.[44] Sulfate polysaccharides exhibit immunomodulatory, antitumor, antithrombotic, anticoagulant, anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and even antiviral activity against HIV, herpes, and hepatitis.[45] They also improve insulin resistance in HIV.[46] They also protect against aflatoxin and cisplatin chemotherapy induced liver damage.[47][48]  Data Source: Click here for more info.
