Just to state the obvious we all know that maintaning passwords etc is vital when it comes to data security of computers and particuarly cryptocurrencies. I myself have used a secure a spreadsheet to record mine plus a few separete doc.
When I started working cryption currencies about 18months ago I aspired to get myself a good solid hard wallet for added security. I did some research and eventually settled on the Ledger Nano S and was pleased to have bought one for about US$100 via an online auction site Trademe in New Zealand.
All went well , although, I was dissappointed with the limited storage capability, and the fact you could really only store data for about 5 or 6 currencies .
I had followed instructions and carefully recorded the 24 word recovery phrase.
In May this year a firmware upgrade was available and was reassured that all currency data (not a great $$ amount but many hours of effort) was not at risk so I followed the upgraded instructions only to find that the upgrade process could not be completed due to a "Bootlock" error. After much tooing and froing of emails to the Support@Ledger.com I shipped my device off to France.
When the replacement device arrived back I eventually go around to trying the recovery process and entered the recorded 24 word Recovery Phrase from my spreadsheet. Image my surprise when it said "Unable to Validate" !!
Sadly after about 3 failed attempts I've had to acknowledge that I had either written down the original 24 word Recovery Phase incorrectly or something had happened at the factory when they did whatever they do with faulty devices.
At this stage I'm waiting to hear whether the Ledger based currency addresses I've been using on a number of faucets will effective be lost if I'm forced to initiate the wallet as a new device.
Is so then if will just add to the many hours of wasted effort and a lesson hard learnt.
I trust you have not made the same mistake.
