Asian stocks tumbled on Monday as concerns over the economic impact of the spreading corona virus increased. "All investors are seeing is headlines about the corona virus causing investors to sell," said Takeo Kamai of CLSA in Tokyo.
The Nikkei index, which comprises 225 values, was 1.8 percent lower over the course of the year at 23,408 points. The broader Topix index fell 1.3 percent to 1708 points.
The Shanghai stock exchange fell 2.8 percent. The index of the most important companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen lost 3.1 percent. The MSCI index for Asian stocks outside of Japan fell 0.2 percent.
In Asian currency trading, the dollar fell 0.3 percent to 108.93 yen and rose 0.5 percent to 6.9364 yuan. The Swiss currency was 0.1 percent lower at 0.9700 francs. At the same time, the euro rose 0.1 percent to $ 1.1033 and hardly changed at CHF 1.0704. The pound sterling lost 0.1 percent to $ 1.3064.
